Traffic Tickets in the Town of Southampton

The main road in Southampton is New York State Route 27 (NYS-27). This road starts out in Queens and runs the length of the southern half of Long Island. The configuration of Route 27 changes a few times in Southampton, as does its name. As the NYS-27 enters Southampton from the west, it is known as the Sunrise Highway. At this point, the highway is two lanes in each direction with wide shoulders and a wide median. The speed limit is 55 mph.

As the NYS-27 enters Shinnecock Hills, its shape and name change. The lanes narrow and the road turns into a main drag and commercial area. The speed limit is reduced to 35 miles per hour. In this area, the NYS-27 is known as the Southampton Bypass and the POW/MIA Memorial Highway. The NYS-27 continues east and when it reaches the Water Mill area, the road narrows to one lane in each direction. The NYS-27 now goes by the name Montauk Highway. It continues in this way eastward until it reaches the tip of Long Island at Montauk Point.

Most traffic stops in Southampton occur on the NYS-27. In the western part of the town, the NYS-27 is patrolled by New York State Police. They conduct many traffic stops, mostly for speeding violations. Due to the straight and wide nature of the road, many motorists end up speeding. We have seen many traffic citations issued in this area charging motorists with speeding in the 80-mph range. On local streets most traffic stops are conducted by officers of the Southampton Police Department.

Traffic citations in the town of Southampton are adjudicated in the Southampton Justice Court (Town of Southampton Justice Court). The court is located at 32 Jackson Avenue in the Hamlet of Hampton Bays. This court currently has four town justices and handles all criminal, civil, traffic, and parking violations. The hours of operation are Monday -Friday 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. Criminal arraignments can take place in the evenings and weekends.

Please note that five of the seven Southampton villages have their own justice courts. They are Quogue, Sag Harbor, Southampton, Westhampton Beach, and West Hampton Dunes. This means any violation alleged to have occurred within those villages will be adjudicated in the relevant village court.
